Can Ch. Gaylan’s Hole in One MH MX MXJ NF WCX OD VCX CCA “Una”

Gayle Watkins

I am so proud to send this brag that Una and I finished her Master Hunter title weekend of October 1 and earned a bumper leg weekend of October 8. She is now Can CH Gaylan’s Hole in One MH MX MXJ NF WCX OD VCX CCA   http://www.k9data.com/pedigree.asp?ID=80875.

Una and I have faced many challenges along the way to her Master title, most of which had me convinced we would never get there despite her passion for the work. Right after she finished her SH, I got sick and was laid up for two years. She was 8 as we started back into training so I worried about her age and doing the level of work required for Master. Two months later, I found out that Una had lost all the vision in her right eye due to pigmentary uveitis. At that point, I was sure our journey to Master was over but Una had different ideas.

We made some adaptations and kept training, finally screwing up the courage to enter. Una earned two legs in our first two Master tests! Then she came in season, requiring a month-long hiatus. When we got back to training and competing, something wasn’t quite right. She failed a few tests and just wasn’t running like the dog that I knew. I suspected she had pyometra so decided to have her spayed. During the surgery we found out it wasn’t an infection, it was SIX POUNDS of uterine cysts that were slowing her down. Her recovery took a while so we had to wait till the spring to get back to training and testing.

We had to wait impatiently through a horrendous NY winter but finally got out in late April. Just as we started training again, the pressure in Una’s eye skyrocketed, requiring that we remove her eye. That surgery meant 30 days of NO activity so we waited impatiently to get started again. At this point she was 9 years old and was showing her age with some arthritis in her carpals and a sore stifle. Although I don’t know why, we also had to make further adaptations to her handling now that the eye was gone. We did and started entering tests again in July.

After one failure when she simply could not see the birds, she then earned four passes in a row and is now running like a young dog. We have passed in terrible heat, Hurricane Irene, in miserable cold, wind and rain. She weathers these conditions much better than I do!

Una is my first breeder-owner trained and handled Master Hunter and it is an honor to walk to the line with this dog, who lives to hunt and rises to every challenge she can see ?. My thanks to Team Una, those who have helped me manage her body and learn this sport, adapting it to her challenges. You are the BEST!!

I hope Una can encourage the golden retriever community to face PU head on and while we figure out how to cure/manage this disease, allow the affected dogs to live full rich lives. Una definitely doesn’t ask for anyone’s pity, only that you throw the darn birds and get out of the way!! I love you, Una! You are my hero!!
